Power Outage Policy and Procedure

Depending on a season, weather conditions and circumstances of the power outage, the facility may remain open or be shut down.

It is up to management’s discretion to make a decision. This decision has to be based on definition of Health and Safety of children in care and take into consideration the following:

  • we will not have heat or air ventilation in the whole facility,
  • we will not be able to store any perishable food, as fridges are going to be off,
  • we will not be able to heat lunches or bottles up, as we will not have microwaves
  • the telephone land line will still be working,
  • emergency lights would normally last only for six hours,
  • we will still have hot water (as it is supported by a gas tank),
  • fire alarm will not work, but the sprinklers still go off in case of fire.

For the scheduled Power Outage facility may stay in operation during late spring and till the end of summer, as long as temperature outside will allow to support at least 18C inside of the facility.

The letter to parents has to be sent out. See the sample attached.

FIRE EMERGENCY PROCEDURE

In case of the fire teachers will follow the regular Fire Emergency Procedure as soon as sprinklers go off. Do not wait for the fire alarm to sound!

During the late fall and early spring in case of scheduled Power Outage the facility will be closed. The letter notification has to be sent out to parents.

If during this period power goes off unexpectedly and does not come back in two hours, contact all the parents and request to pick children up immediately.
