Outdoor Play Policy

Outdoor play is a mandatory part of our daily schedule. We believe that children benefit greatly from time spent outside, and it is important for staff to follow the outlined procedures to ensure safety and fun during outdoor activities.

Staff Responsibilities:

Weather-Appropriate Clothing

It is the responsibility of parents to dress their child according to the weather and any potential changes in weather conditions. Staff should remind parents to send appropriate outerwear based on seasonal needs (e.g., jackets, hats, sunscreen).

Essential Items

When taking children outside for walks or playground activities, staff must ensure that the following items are taken along:

• First Aid Kit
• Medication (e.g., Epi-Pen, Inhaler)
• Phone (for emergency contact)

Summer Activities

Pools

During the summer, small pools may be set up for children. Staff are responsible for:

• Filling the pool with fresh water and ensuring it is emptied out daily.
• Always supervising children while they are in or near the pool.

Shaded Areas

Canopies, beach umbrellas, and picnic table umbrellas will be used to create shaded areas for children during the summer months to protect them from excessive sun exposure.

Playground Safety

The playground is completely fenced to ensure children’s safety. However, staff must:

• Count children before exiting the facility and when arrived to the playground. 
• Always supervise children.
• Ensure that children only enter the facility with a teacher or their parent/caregiver.

Playground Inspection

Before entering the playground:

• Check the ground for foreign items, animal feces, and standing water.
• Ensure that the playground is clean and safe for children to play.
• Any standing water should be dumped out to prevent accidents.

End of Playground Time

Before leaving the playground:

• Count children.
• Clean up all toys and organize large toys, such as riding toys.
• Lock the playground gate and shed using the key.
• Count children and lead them back inside.
