Guidelines for Snack and Lunch Times

Snack time is an important part of our daily routine and provides a valuable opportunity for social interaction, nutrition, and learning. It is offered once or twice daily, depending on the program schedule.

Snack is considered a social time for both children and staff. Children will be encouraged, but never forced, to eat, and food will never be withheld as a form of discipline.

Staff Responsibilities During Snack Time

Staff are expected to:

  • Schedule snack helpers, where appropriate, to assist in preparation and serving.
  • Review and follow all documented food allergies, cultural, or religious dietary restrictions for each child.
  • Provide a variety of snack choices, when possible, to promote independence and accommodate preferences.
  • Ensure all children wash their hands thoroughly before eating.
  • Sit with the children during snack time to model positive eating habits and engage in conversation, supporting social and language development.

This approach helps foster a relaxed, inclusive, and respectful environment where children feel supported in developing healthy eating habits and social skills.
